Fire Service Recruitment Insider Advice

It seems to be a common belief that you have to have very specific skills and attributes to become successful and land a job as a firefighter. Although some specific skills, physical abilities and other attribute can help you during the fire service recruitment and selection process this does not mean that it is not possible or in many cases that it will make it harder for you to be selected due to any shortfalls you may think you have.

Take my FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL that will help you on your way to a more successful outcome to become a firefighter.

I have had discussions over recent times with professionals in recruitment and indeed within fire service recruitment, it has become very clear to me over the past few years that this is a very common and indeed wrong veiw-point when in actual fact these are the things that the fire service recruitment team are really looking for.

The main thing the fire service recruitment team are looking for is that you will be able to be taught and absorb the concepts and skills required to turn you into a good firefighter, this far outweighs any specific trait such as being extra strong etc. Allot of this comes through the data you provide in the aptitude test, psychometric profiling and interview. This is the information that is scrutinised in order to decide wether you are a fit or not so don’t just think that you shouldn’t bother because you don’t think you are what they are looking for.

Top 5 things Fire Service Recruitment Are Looking For

the 5 top things they looks for in a potential recruit. I have summarized these to share with you. It will be worth while having a look at this list and thinking how these qualities and abilities apply to you.

1. Ability to communicate

2. Knowledge of the role

3. Your knowledge of their organization

4. Your demonstrated ability to perform under adverse circumstances

5. Proven ability to operate effectively as part of a team

I hope this has given you some insight into the process and refreshed your outlook on the process.

To Your Success,

Fitness Tips - Fire Service Recruitment Australia

There are a number of fitness challenges you will face during the fire service recruitment process when applying to a fire service within Australia. Even If you are really fit and strong it is still worth taking the time to look into this part of the process. It is better to be safe than sorry and I have seen plenty of really fit and sorry people leave the process at an early stage for simply ignoring this integral part of the process.

It is a given that you will need to demonstrate your VO2 max normally in the form of The Beep Test. For fire service recruitment in Australia the level to obtain for the majority of services is 9.6 which is quite high considering the army and police are somewhere around levels 6 – 8 depending on the position you are applying for. My big and obvious tip for this is make sure you can Pass The Beep Test before you go on test day. I know that sounds really obvious BUT make sure you do it so that you can go in with confidence knowing that you will definitely pass and move to the next step of the fire service recruitment process.

There are also some other tests which look at your ability to perform tasks that a firefighter may need to carry out on a day to day basis, find out what these are and have a go at them, if you cant do them train to overcome each one. I have made a detailed plan covering each activity and the requirement as well as a training program for each in my book

Fire Service Recruitment – The Process For Success

The main thing is that you find out what is required and do whatever it takes to make sure you will definitely pass. It is a long way to come just to fail because you did not take the time to get it right. I have seen the biggest fittest looking blokes fail this on many occasions. Allot of the time it comes down to their technique because they have not researched properly. I have helped many much smaller people pass what some of the big guys have failed.

Take my FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL that will help you on your way to a more successful outcome to become a firefighter.

Hopefully you come across this before it is time for you to demonstrate your abilities to the fire service recruitment panel.

To Your Success,

Fire Brigade Recruitment and Aptitude Testing.

During Fire Brigade Recruitment you will be required to undergo some testing to prove you mental ability to problem solve using various parts of the brain. In Australia this is most commonly known as aptitude testing.

It is very important in the first instance that you dont just brush this part of the process off. Many applicants come unstuck at this very early stage of fire brigade recruitment for this very reason. Don’t underestimate the aptitude test.

How To Become A Firefighter – Find Out The Secrets To Beat Your Competition.

There are a number of subjects covered in the aptitude tests. I will list the most common ones used in fire brigade recruitment.

If you are a fresh school leaver some of these may be familiar to you and others may not, if you have been out of the study type environment for some time these questions can seem overwhelming sometimes. but don’t disappear either way as it is often easy to improve your performance.

Take my FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL that will help you on your way to a more successful outcome to become a firefighter.

The following areas are those you will be tested on during aptitude assessment testing.

1. Mechanical Reasoning.

2. Verbal Reasoning.

3. Mathematical Reasoning.

4. Abstract Reasoning.

5. Spatial Reasoning or Awareness.

Sometimes you may find them listed in slightly different terminology particularly if you are looking at overseas websites or products.

I am currently developing a course to help you improve your scores and breeze through this section of the fire service recruitment. I have also included some more in-depth information and examples in my book which you can get at the bottom of this article.

The fire brigade recruitment process is a very competitive process, it is the little advantages you pick up along the way that will put you on the next recruit course. This is a particularly important subject when it comes to fire brigade recruitment.

Take my FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL that will help you on your way to a more successful outcome to become a firefighter.

Fire service Entry Requirements.

Before putting in hours of effort and preparation it is extremely important that you check the fire service entry requirements. in regards to medical, physical and citizenship requirement to make sure you are eligible to join. You can generally find this information out through the fire service website. Specific to the fire service that you are applying to. Ringing the HR Recruitment team or asking a current fire fighter to look into it for you or point you in the right direction.

Although each fire service differs slightly depending on the state or territory you live in. in general you will need the following to apply and/or join an Australian fire service.

Fire Service Entry Requirements – Become A Firefighter Sooner.

1. Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency.

2. Pre-Employment Medical Assessment.

3. National Police Check.

4. Valid Drivers Licence.

5. First Aid Certificate.

6. Aptitude requirement. ( schooling requirement – more info in other articles. ).

The 6 things I have listed above are a definite for becoming a firefighter. within all fire services in Australia. so make sure you tick all of the boxes above before expending more energy on your journey to become a firefighter. There is always an aptitude component as part of fire service entry requirement, this differs slightly depending on which service you are applying for but in most cases this is required over any specific schooling level.

There are cases where firefighters from different countries may be able to do an exchange or similar. without being a permanent resident or citizen but we are mainly talking about how to become a firefighter. and want to give you the best information for this along the way.

I hope this has been of some help.

Regards,

I’m sure you could list of a few of your own reasons for wanting to become a firefighter and get a job with the fire service. that would make the fire service recruitment process seem all worth while.

After I finished a session with a guy I was helping through the recruitment process. for the fire service in Melbourne I started thinking why, why is it that so many people want to become firefighters as a career.

I know it sounds like a pretty simple question that you could answer very quickly. but It made me want to figure out the main reasons behind peoples individual desire. particularly before obtaining a job with the fire service and then after being in for a while.

Take my FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL that will help you on your way to a more successful outcome in becoming a firefighter

Learn How To Become A Firefighter and Secrets That The Majority Don’t Know.

So I decided to ask those I have worked with, those that I currently work with and the people aspiring to become firefighters. I will list the main reasons that kept recurring through this process, I hope this may help you decide or confirm your desire to become part of the profession.

I wanted a job where no day was the same. Unpredictable and exciting.

I like or liked the idea of being able to help people when they really need it.

Always been interested in firefighting and have wanted to be a fireman or firefighter since I was a child.

Wanted to be in a respected profession within the community and be a valued part of the community.

Like the idea of the diversity of roles covered within the fire service ie. Rope rescue, road accident rescue, fire, hazmat incidents.

Liked the look of the roster and holidays for spending time with family.

I was looking for a secure profession that was not going to be boring and offers a career path.

These are not in order but are the main reasons that kept cropping up again and again. when I was asking people from across the above groups, it was interesting to note that the reasons did not change a great deal between the perspective firefighters and those that have been in the service for a number of years. It was nice to see this theme unfold as it shows the career does offer a rewarding experience. and this is shown by a minuscule number of people ever resigning once they have become a firefighter.

I would really love to hear from you If you would like to share your reasons. so I can add them in here and share it amongst everyone, there may be reasons in there you may never have thought of, I know there are some I did not initially consider which have become more important to me as time has gone on. I wish you the best of luck in your venture to become a firefighter and am here to help you through the process.

Best Wishes,

Have you ever had trouble with a fire service recruitment panel interview. or do you have one coming up?

It is possible that what you think you should be putting across in the interview. and what is required to become successful is not EXACTLY the same thing, this is where the majority of people fall down guaranteed.

Take my FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL that can help you on your way to a successful outcome in becoming a firefighter

Clear communication between candidates and interview panels are more than just that, there are a number of body language, tone and appearance factors that influence an interview panel that I think most of us are aware of. (If not you can find them in this book ) .

Although clear communication is extremely important. it’s only important if you are communicating the right information, so if you think that a panel wants to hear about (A) when they really want to hear about (B). you can see how it would not matter how well you communicated on this as you are in the wrong ball park from the start. I see this time and time again working with people. that have been unsuccessful or have a preconceived ideas about what they think the panel wants to hear.

A really important thing to remember is exactly this. you need to do your research on the organization as well as on your self. and your key skills and attributes so that you can match them up when the day comes.

Learn About The Fire Service Recruitment Process That The Majority Don’t Know

I have developed a Fire Service Recruitment book that covers the interview in every detail, which the recruiters tried to stop me distributing.(I look at this as a compliment as it must be pretty well on the mark if the fire service recruiters don’t want it out there).

The guide covers all types of different scenarios. and is good to get you thinking of skills and demonstrated behaviors from different jobs or previous employment or sporting clubs that you have been involved in.

One tip that helps allot of people, just start thinking about when you have demonstrated skills that are desired by the fire service, when they pop into your head note them down. so by the time the interview comes around you will have a number of great answers that you would not have been able to recall on the spot.

Fire Service Recruitment.

Are you having trouble getting a job with the fire service?

Have you ever just wondered why it seems so hard to get into the fire service as a career. and why is it so hard to get through the fire service recruitment process.

Is it possible that you have not been able to demonstrate your skills and attributes in the way that the fire service wants? Even know you have excellent skills and a great resume.

Knowing the fire service recruitment process and how to communicate your strengths. is allot different from just having those skills and attributes.

Learn How To Pass The Fire Service Recruitment Tests And Beat The Competition

Take my FREE VIDEO TUTORIAL class that can help you on your way to a more successful outcome in becoming a firefighter

From my experience some of the best people miss out on jobs in the fire service due to the simple statement above.

It is not uncommon to speak to perspective firefighters after they have finished their final interview. or stage of the fire service recruitment process. and they are in high spirits and often think they have done a great job only to find out they have missed out, this is a very common occurrence I have seen over the past 6 years, it never seems to change.

I have had the opportunity to work with a number of people to completely change there outcome. in a very short amount of time through applying simple strategies and employing some simple study techniques in a structured easy to follow format, It still does amaze me the difference in results these simplistic step by step methods work.

Take my FREE online quick-start class that can help you on your way to a more successful outcome in becoming a firefighter

A really important point to be aware of. during the fire service recruitment and selection process is to find out exactly what they are looking for in a successful applicant, I know this sounds like a no brainer. but it is really worth having a think about and doing some research, this is just one area that can put you in front of the pack. Sometimes it can be as simple as a phone call to the HR Recruiting department. or chatting with a recent successful applicant, these are often the things that make others feel uncomfortable but a definite winner if you get the right person on the other end.

In my opinion, it is not that it is hard to become a firefighter or get a job with the fire service, it is more a matter of getting the right information and learning how to apply it to benefit you most. There are a number of obstacles along the road during the fire service recruitment process but the same applies in most cases.

Sincerely best wishes,

Firefighter Jobs – Fitness Requirements.

To get firefighter jobs you need to be fit. Until you have experienced the physical demands of working near a fire, you may not fully appreciate the fitness levels a person needs to reach before they can become a fire fighter. In addition surviving heat and smoke exposure, fire fighter jobs require you to climb heights and pull heavy equipment while in this environment.

Learn How To Get Firefighter Jobs Easily.

Some people tend to have the genetic abilities, and previous physical training, that helps them land a firefighter job. Others will need to adjust or commence a specific fitness training program. and even progress in it for a lengthy period of time. before they will have the physical abilities to meet the fitness requirements of being a fire fighter in Australia.

The beep test.

The beep test is a standard fitness test that is used all around the world. not only for testing fire fighters, but it is used by military personal, sports coaches and schools. The beep test system works with a pre-recorded audio device that sounds loud ‘beeping’ noises. Participants are required to run a 20m distance before the next beep sounds, and as the test progresses, the beeps become closer and closer together.

At first, participants will only need to run approximately 8km an hour. and at each stage of the test, they will need to run around 0.5km an hour faster than the one before. Depending on which department you intend on joining, as a fire fighter, you will need to reach between 8-10 on the beep test to pass. To practice for the beep test, you can train on medium length runs, and also sprints. You can also obtain a copy of a beep test recording yourself, mark out your own 20m course, and practice improving your score every time you train. The general entry level in Australia to obtain Firefighter jobs. is just under level 10 in most cases 9.6.

Simulated Fitness Requirements.

When you apply for firefighter jobs, expect to participate in a range of other fitness tests that will simulate the real-life requirements of a firefighter. These include a simulated hose drag, to assess a firefighter’s ability to carry a heavy water filled hose, a heights anxiety test to ensure you can climb and work safely in a high environment, and a simulated heavy tool test which will measure your upper and lower body strength.

An important factor in these tests, is that just because you feel strong or can lift weights at home. it doesn’t mean the quality of your strength will be the same in firefighter jobs. Fire fighters need to push and pull unorthodox objects and they need to activate many muscles groups in one activity. This is very different to the process of lifting a bar bell or using resistance strength machine in a gym. If you are seeking to land a firefighter job, consider structuring your home fitness program accordingly to mimic the demands of recruitment testing, and an actual fire fighter job. You will find this puts you in good stead for judgment day and the entire fire recruitment and selection process.
